Befriending Your Nervous System

I do a lot of cognitive behavioral work with my clients, 

To help them to moves you forward in powerful ways.

BUT, for people with trauma, 

BIG TRAUMAS, Small Traumas, or tiny traumas.

Which is pretty much everyone in one way or another,

The MISSING PIECE is befriending your nervous system.

This includes gaining awareness of your own unique nervous system,

And how you have learned to adapt.

These adaptations are how your body has coded the trauma to protect you and keep you safe in the future.

And most if not all of these adaptations may not be serving you.

When our nervous system perceives a threat, 

We either get assigned a state of connection,

Or we get assigned a state of protection.

We can only be in one state at a time.

And a lot of times our nervous system threat detector gets it wrong, 

And we get assigned this state of protection when there is really no actual danger.

We may be stuck in protection yet desperately yearning for connection in our relationships.

When we get assigned protection, our body takes over,

And we lose access to our prefrontal cortex that engages our higher thinking.

We will be unable to access the cognitive skills you may have learned.

This can negatively affect our sense of safety, our stress level, and our health.

This state of protection jacks us up on increased energy to help us engage in fight, flight, or freeze.

But, when there isn’t a real danger this will only create issues for us and our relationships.

We may find ourselves gearing up for a fight,

Spinning, obsessing, or worrying in our minds,

Or running, hiding out, or avoiding the people we love most.

We may be stuck in fear or anxiety,

AND unable to do what we truly want to do.

And then oftentimes, we react in ways that do not align with our integrity.

We end up showing up in ways that go against who we truly want to be. 

This missing piece and combined with learning and up-leveling your cognitive skills will propel you on your healing journey,

And help you get back to connecting with those you love and are desperately trying to reach.
